After the JAM Patch 0.1.0: new features and units

Hello everyone!

First of all, I’d like to thank everyone who voted for Defend The Tiny King and left comments. Despite everything, the game ranked #133, which isn’t bad at all considering the number of participants and, of course, the quality of the winning entries. So congratulations to all of them!

As I mentioned in the previous DevLog, I would release a new patch after the JAM. So... here we go!

New mechanics and features:

  • When hovering the cursor over a unit, its stat information will now be displayed.

  • A new level and experience system has been added. Units will now level up and become stronger!

    • Important: the unit will flash yellow when leveling up. This is still in development — I plan to improve the level-up feedback later on by adding particles, small text, etc.

New allied units:

  • A new unit called "Rider" has been added. This soldier rides a pig (a horse felt... too typical? I wanted to give the unit a bit more personality). They're expensive but act as tanks that quickly draw aggro thanks to their speed.

  • A new unit called "Witch" has been added. She shoots a magical projectile that explodes and deals area damage. Definitely a key unit in the late game to help destroy the incoming hordes.

New enemy units:

  • A new "Rider" enemy unit has been added. This is a goblin mounted on a giant rat. Like the human rider, it's a fast tank unit.

  • A new "TNT" unit has been added. This goblin throws dynamite that causes an area explosion. Like the witch, his role is to deal area damage and force the player to spread out their units.

New Units

Looking ahead to patch 0.2.0:

I plan to add two new unit types for both factions:

  • Flying units (which cannot be damaged by ground-only attacks),

  • Passive killers, units that throw AoE zones which apply DoTs (damage over time) to the player.

With this patch, I aim to complete the full set of units the game will include (I might consider adding a couple more later), but for now, I’d like to finalize the full roster so I can move on to designing more parts of the game and improving existing features.
